It is actually not as bad as you think! It taste like custard if you can't smell it. I actually grew up eating this fruit. I am from Southeast Asia.
If you can't smell it, then you can't really taste it, so what's the point? You Southeast Asian people are weird :)
It really does smell horrible. I had a hard time getting past the smell in order to actually taste it. The worst part was trying to transport it in a minivan from NYC to New Brunswick, NJ... with a baby in the car.
